Description

Employers must take all reasonable precautions to protect workers and create a safe working environment. This 50-page handbook provides workplaces with guidance on how to identify hazards that may potentially cause harm, assess their risk, determine control measures, and evaluate the effectiveness of controls.

By following this ongoing process, workplaces can take practical steps to protect the health and safety of workers, property, processes, and the environment. This process is the foundation of a proactive approach to managing workplace health and safety.

This handbook builds on information provided in Health and Safety Foundations, which summarizes core aspects of important health and safety topics.

Objectives

In this handbook, you will learn how to:

  • Recognize and identify existing and potential hazards
  • Categorize hazards to understand how they can cause harm
  • Select the risk assessment method appropriate for the task, equipment, or process being evaluated
  • Implement hazard controls using the hierarchy of controls
  • Evaluate hazard controls for effectiveness
  • Review and monitor hazards

Scope

This handbook focuses on how a workplace can identify hazards, assess them, determine appropriate control measures, and evaluate the effectiveness of the controls. It provides an overview of biological, chemical, ergonomic, physical, psychosocial, and safety hazards. It also reviews risk assessment methods and covers hazard control and evaluation as part of the cycle of continuous improvement for workplace health and safety.

Note: The information provided in this handbook is not intended to replace the requirements outlined in occupational health and safety legislation. You must always check and follow the regulatory requirements in your jurisdiction.

Target Audience

This handbook is for employers, supervisors, workers, health and safety committee members and representatives, union representatives, health and safety professionals, and anyone else with an interest in workplace health and safety.
