Description

Please note: This course combines the former CCOHS courses, “Office Health and Safety” and “WHMIS 2015 for Office Environments.”

Although offices are not always thought of as hazardous places to work, injuries and illnesses that happen in an office can be just as serious and costly as those that occur in any other workplace.

This two-part course explains common safety hazards found in office environments. Participants will learn how to identify, mitigate, and prevent these common workplace hazards. It also provides a focused look at the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS), which meets this system's legislated component for education. Part two on WHMIS includes the December 2022 Hazardous Products Act amendments.

Note: This course on its own may not meet training requirements for office health and safety in all jurisdictions. It should be supplemented by further instruction and hands-on training that is specific to the jurisdiction, job, worksite, and equipment.

Topics include:

  • Hazards in the office environment
    • Components of a health and safety program
    • Types of hazards, including ergonomic, psychosocial, biological, safety, and indoor air quality
  • Chemical hazards and WHMIS
    • Introduction to chemical hazards
    • WHMIS education and training
    • WHMIS classifications, pictograms, labels, and safety data sheets
    • Products excluded from WHMIS

Upon completion of this course you will be able to:

  • Identify the key components of a health and safety program, including their importance
  • Recognize the different types of hazards commonly found in an office environment
  • Define WHMIS and identify its key components, including employer and worker responsibilities
