Description

Learn about avian influenza A(H5N1), what animals carry the virus, the signs and symptoms in animals and humans, how workplaces can reduce the risk, and what to do if you suspect you have been exposed to the virus.

This course covers occupations at risk of exposure, the diseases that can be contracted from ticks, mosquitoes, and various wildlife species, and control measures that can protect workers from becoming ill. Information on reporting zoonotic diseases is also included in the course.

  • Identify sources of exposure to avian influenza A(H5N1)
  • Describe the signs and symptoms of avian influenza A(H5N1) in humans, birds, and mammals
  • Determine what control measures a worker should take to minimize contact with infected birds and mammals
  • Complete any reporting requirements to your employer and the proper government or other agencies in Canada

Target Audience

This course is designed for workers who may be exposed to any bird or mammal infected with avian influenza A(H5N1). This may include poultry and dairy farm workers, laboratory workers testing raw milk, veterinary workers, wildlife officers, slaughterhouse workers, on-farm labourers, and other occupations.
