Through its services and products, CCOHS advances health and safety in Canadian workplaces, and the physical and mental well-being of Canadians.

The IT Development and Operations Service Unit provides computer and information technology support to CCOHS products, services and operations under an integrated Information Technology (IT) strategy, incorporating the most appropriate IT infrastructure tools and processes to support mission-critical functions. The IT Development and Operations Service Unit is responsible for the analysis, design and development of computer system products; the production and delivery of information products; the design, development and maintenance of databases; development and management of the CCOHS website and websites for partner organizations; and the management and delivery of projects assigned to the unit.

The User Experience/User Interface (UX/UI) Designer is responsible for the design of user experience and user interface systems, including:

Duties

    • User Experience Research and Design Conducts competitive analyses of similar systems; researches targeted users; researches and recommends content structures and information architectures; designs user flows and wireframes; develops prototypes and performs usability and accessibility tests to build user experience strategies from the ground up for CCOHS websites, digital products and services, third party websites and mobile apps. (40%)
    • Team Coordination Coordinates with development and UI design teams on issues related to interfaces such as navigation, page routing and product page design to ensure the UI element design and implementation meet standards and UX design expectation. (25%)
    • User Interface and Visual Design Follows user experience strategies including user flows and wireframes to create visual and interactive elements of the digital product and service interfaces including web and mobile app interfaces. (20%)
    • Metrics Reporting and Evaluation Tracks usability goals and prepares reports for the management team and stakeholders; recommends solutions to address usability issues and improve user experiences. (10%)
    • Other Participates in project teams to meet targets and deliverables assigned to the teams. Performs other related duties, as required. (5%)

Scope of Position

  • The position reports to the Manager, IT Development and Operations Service Unit, and is a member of a team responsible for building brand new, or implementing enhancement on existing, websites or mobile apps including CCOHS website, products and services, as well as web applications or mobile apps for external clients, following Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) best practices and methodologies.
  • The position conducts competitive analyses and user research to develop user experience strategies, define interaction models and information architecture, design user flow and develop prototypes, ultimately work with the UI design team to finalize design elements and content, as well as the development team to implement the UX/UI design.
  • The position communicates and builds consensus around UX design, interaction design, interface design and content strategy through interacting with clients and negotiating solutions throughout the entire product life cycle to realize CCOHS product vision or meet clients’ requirements following the agreed timelines.
  • The position works closely with members of the IT development teams, the Communications & Marketing Department, project teams and external clients/partners to exchange information, prepare recommendations and provide creative support and guidance.

Know-How

  • The position requires thorough knowledge of User Interface Design principles, Human Factors, User-Centered Design Practices, Mobile UX design principals, web development useability guidelines and accessibility standards (WCAG2.0).
  • The position requires excellent communication skills to communicate with internal and external clients to build consensus around all major design and user experience strategies, coordinate with development and UI design teams to provide guidance in the full SDLC cycle.
  • The position requires an advanced understanding of the business logic and user flows of CCOHS websites, mobile apps, products and services, as well as a broad knowledge of UX/UI design trends and best practices.
  • The position requires creativity in translating product requirements and customer research into clearly defined design deliverables - sketches, flow diagrams, wireframes, mock-ups, and prototypes that lead to intuitive user experiences. The position should also possess a thorough knowledge of colour theory, composition, and typography as well as computer illustration methods, design techniques, and interactive multimedia environments.
  • Knowledge of a wide range of software is essential in this position, including image editing (Adobe Photoshop), illustration (e.g. Adobe Illustrator) page layout (InDesign), web design (Adobe Experience Designer), animation (Adobe Animate, Adobe Creative Cloud, scanning software, asset management (Adobe CC Libraries), PowerPoint and Adobe Acrobat.
  • Deep understanding of mobile UI design systems/guidelines such as Material Design system and Human Interface Guidelines.
  • Knowledge of Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) and basics knowledge of web/mobile development technologies such as HTML, CSS and JavaScript or front-end frameworks are also required to better understand technology capabilities and potential constraints in order to choose best solutions in UX/UI design.
  • The ability to work with content written in both official languages (English and French).

Problem-Solving

The position:

  • Conducts competitive analyses and researches users to develop user experience strategies; defines interaction models and information architecture; designs user flow; and develops prototypes based on clients’ requirements or target demographic, following design principals/standards and best practices.
  • Understands the possibilities and constraints of current technology and can work around those constraints and discover new possibilities in creating great user experiences.
  • Performs creative thinking with great attention to detail within tight timelines.
  • Works with the development and UI design team to ensure the agreed user experience strategy, interaction model and information architecture are followed in the implementation; finds best solutions to address design-related issues during the design and implementation stages, ensuring best practices are followed and clients’ requirements are met.
  • Monitors and investigates trends, technologies, and new approaches in UX design, graphics, web and mobile design to help ensure CCOHS is innovating and continuously improving in this area.
  • Troubleshoots issues related to user experience, accessibility, and performance; addresses issues or recommends solutions to development and UI design teams.

Accountability

The position is accountable for:

  • Conducting competitive analyses and user research based on clients’ requirements or target demographic. Guiding product decisions through user research, customer development and iterative feedback loop.
  • Recommending content structure and information architecture following best practices.
  • Designing user flows and wireframes, developing prototypes and conducting usability and accessibility tests.
  • Communicating and negotiating with internal and external clients around UX design, interaction design, interface design and content strategy to realize CCOHS’ product vision or meet client requirements.
  • Coordinating with development and UI design teams on design issues including navigation, page routing, product page design; reviewing, testing and approving the work from UI design and development teams, and providing guidance to ensure the UI element design as well as the implementation of the design meet standards and follow agreed user experience strategy and information architecture.
  • Following established user experience strategy including user flows and wireframe to create visual and interactive elements of product interface for the development team.
  • Tracking usability goals and monitoring performance of web/mobile applications and CCOHS products and services; addressing design issues and providing guidance to the development and UI design team when needed.
  • Completing work agreed to and assigned in project team plan following the agreed timelines.
  • Adjusting to frequently changing priorities and deadlines and notifying the affected team leader(s) and Service Unit Manager(s)/Supervisor(s) should time constraints or other challenges arise that require resolution.

Working Conditions

  • Physical Effort: The employee works at a computer (keyboarding and mousing to read and reply to e-mail, prepare reports, review information, etc.) for the majority of the workday. The work is interspersed with non-computer based activity, such as reading, thinking, proof-reading, photocopying, filing. The employee has some control over the workload and can get up, stretch, and walk on a regular basis. Some stooping and lifting (or handling of light material) may be required.
  • Physical Environment: The employee works at a desk and/or a computer workstation with a keyboard and a mouse for the majority of the workday. The workstation and desk are ergonomically set up, with a wrist rest, mouse rest, document holder, task lamp, as required. The lighting meets standards and there are adjustable blinds on the windows as required. The building environmental controls meet general office requirements. Some risk of RMI due to intensity and duration of work unless safe work procedures outlined are followed.
  • Sensory Attention: The position requires concentration to compose, enter data, proof-read, quality assure, read routine information, communicate with others via e-mail, search for information and listen to others carefully to understand and resolve issues. Concentration and drawing or creating precise and complex graphics are required due to the detailed, creative nature of the work (technical illustration, typography, text editing, etc.).
  • Mental Stress: There are priorities and deadlines which need to be met on a regular basis. There are interruptions from colleagues, supervisor or telephone calls. The employee has some control over the pace of work. Work may be repetitious. The position is the only one who is responsible for UX design in the team and involved in multiple projects at the same time therefore must adjust to frequently changing priorities and deadlines, and there are interruptions while concentrating on complex user experience research and design work. Missing deadline could have impact on development and UI design team, and errors in user flow or information architecture could result in decreased user base or financial lost in CCOHS.

Specifications

  • Post-secondary education in UX, UI or web design related program.
  • 3+ years of experience in designing user experiences, conducting user research, developing information architectures, creating interaction designs, mocking-up user interfaces, crafting prototypes and running usability tests.
  • Thorough knowledge in developing creative, professional, responsive and engaging designs delivered across multiple devices and platforms including mobile apps.
  • 2+ years experience in mobile app user experience and interface design. Deep understanding of mobile UI design systems/guidelines such as Material Design system and Human Interface Guidelines.
  • Expert understanding of design methodology and practices.
  • Desire to work through the entire design process using methods like sketching, storyboarding, diagramming, wire-framing, and prototyping, and testing for digital products.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite software including InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Animate. Adobe Experience Designer (web design), Adobe Acrobat (accessible, functional forms), Adobe Creative Cloud, CC Libraries asset management) and Spark video editing.
  • Extensive knowledge of web accessibility requirements is essential.
  • Ability to work and collaborate with a cross functional team containing IT Systems Analyst, Web Developer and UI designer.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communications (oral and written) skills.
  • Knowledge of HTML, CSS and web development front end frameworks.
  • Knowledge of ITIL v3/4 foundations principles is an asset.
  • 3+ years experience working under a formalized IT Change Management framework.
  • The ability to work with content written in both official languages (English and French).

Salary

Within the range of

$76,073 to $97,945 (CCOHS-09) per annum.
