Hantavirus

Hantavirus has been found in mouse droppings, and can be "inhaled" during dry, dusty conditions such as sweeping out sheds or cabins where these droppings exist. Learners may be able to suggest ways to protect themselves when doing this type of work. Discuss which solutions are good and why.

Suggested Responses:

  1. Build the shed or cabin so it is airtight and won't allow mice in.
  2. Eliminate mice by keeping the area clean and free from "temptations" (food, bedding materials for mice) etc.
  3. Use water to wet the dust, then mop rather than dry sweeping.
  4. Wear a dust mask while doing the work.
